Potomac Impressions
A Virginia Perspective
Welcome
Potomac Impressions is dedicated to the understanding of the Potomac River from a Virginia perspective. Although owned by Maryland, the Potomac has and continues to be a major influence on the commerce and recreation of Virginians.

Often referred to as the "Nation's River", the Potomac has seen the best and worst of times. In the early days of the nation, her waters were filled with fish, oysters, and crabs and she was a great source of food and income. Ship traffic into her many ports rivaled that of the ports of New York and Philadelphia. Many of our early leaders, including George Washington, grew up on the Virginia shores of the Potomac.

However in less than 200 years we have managed to all but destroy the river. Raw sewage and industrial and residential pollution were dumped into the river and its tributaries without much thought or restraint. Silt from uncontrolled erosion flowed into the river's network of creeks and rivers causing great damage to the ecosystem and making ports unnavigable.

There is hope. Starting in the mid 60's, there have been significant improvements in controlling pollution and silting. Although much more needs to be done, water quality has improved and the river is showing some signs of recovery.

The purpose of this site is to educate visitors about the history and current status of the river. We hope that by taking advantage of the many places to see and things to do along the Potomac you will come to appreciate it as much as we do and join the effort to protect and improve the river for ourselves and many generations of our children.
